Professional Education

Medical Professionals, Clergy, Chaplains, & Pastoral Counselors

After the death of someone close, family members and friends often turn to physicians, nurses, healthcare providers and members of the clergy for comfort, guidance, and understanding. Yet these professionals may feel unprepared to provide the emotional support their patients and congregants are seeking.

Since 1998, OUR HOUSE has been part of the curriculum providing grief education for students at the Keck School of Medicine at USC and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. We also provide grief education to rabbinic students from the American Jewish University and other seminaries within Los Angeles.

We train medical professionals and clergy on:
  • Working with patients/congregants facing end-of-life and families who are grieving
  • Exploring beliefs and cultural influences surrounding death
  • Discussing theoretical and ethical considerations specific to working with individuals and families faced with a terminal illness
  • Learning strategies for coping with death and identifying symptoms of compassion fatigue
  • Having a more comprehensive understanding of the grief support resources available in our community, and learn first hand from OUR HOUSE alumni who have experienced the death of a family or friend
