The demand for grief support services in NYC is rising, waitlists are at an all-time high, and thousands of children, teens and adults are in urgent need of help.
1 in 14 children in New York will experience the death of a parent or sibling by age 18. That number doubles by age 25.
Thousands of New Yorkers are suffering from unsupported grief that can severely disrupt daily life, relationships, and economic stability. For grieving children, unaddressed grief can lead to emotional and physical risks, such as depression, substance use, violence and disengagement from school. Individuals and families desperately need a place to find hope and healing after the death of someone close.
OUR HOUSE is seeking to make a difference.
For over 30 years, OUR HOUSE has been a beacon of hope, providing comprehensive grief support services to over 100,000 individuals in Los Angeles. Our approach integrates an age and relationship-based model and the latest bereavement research, ensuring that our programs address the unique challenges faced by grievers, particularly those from marginalized communities. OUR HOUSE is the primary resource for LA families and is positioned to extend its impact to NYC.

When my husband Rick passed away in 2010, my two children (ages 14, 10) and I struggled to find a way to process our grief with professional assistance and begin the healing process. If we had access to the breadth of services OUR HOUSE offers, I know our journey would have been profoundly improved through age and relationship specific support groups, and the support of a community to remind us we were not alone.
OUR HOUSE aims to transform access to grief support in NYC by creating a welcoming, inclusive, and safe space for individuals to share their experiences and begin their journey toward healing. Our Center will be centrally located and offer programs that will normalize the isolating experience of grief and provide essential coping skills through closed support groups that provide comprehensive age and relationship-specific response mechanisms so that no one feels alone in their grief and can relate.
I never thought I could speak about my wife’s death or cry. In this group I was given the opportunity to feel, and they welcomed me without judgement. I have learned that grief is forever, I am grateful to this program and their experience with grief, I can say I am walking towards acceptance.
It was absolutely life changing and I would not have been able to get through that first year. OUR HOUSE will give you a home and it will give you a safe spot to talk about your grief. It will give you people who get it and help you find your people – and these people will likely be in your life for a very long time.
At OUR HOUSE, we ensure that no one is turned away due to financial constraints. OUR HOUSE NYC is in Phase 1 of operationalizing a centrally located support center to be led by Lauren Schneider, the Clinical Director of 25 years from Los Angeles who has been instrumental in honing the OUR HOUSE method across two decades. We are actively recruiting Board Members and Volunteer Support Group Leaders so that we establish our New York-based teams. Your donations directly support our efforts to build our programs in NYC to reach the thousands of individuals in need.
To address the grief crisis in NYC, we are focused on raising $5 million to enable our doors to open in 2025 and respond to the overwhelming demand for services. Your contributions will help us provide vital grief support services, community education, and resources for those who need it most. Together, we can create a healthier, more supportive city for all.
By supporting OUR HOUSE, you are taking a stand against the grief crisis impacting our community. Let’s work together to provide hope and healing for those who need it most.
